Chelsea routs Steaua Bucharest for first UCL win
Bucharest, Romania (SportsNetwork.com) - Chelsea stormed to its first Champions League victory of the season on Tuesday, earning a 4-0 victory over Steaua Bucharest at the Stadionul Steaua.
The Blues jumped in front in 19th minute when Ramires turned in Samuel Eto'o's misguided shot.
Steaua managed to stay within touching distance of Chelsea until a moment of misfortune one minute before the break cost the Romanian side. Eto'o broke free on the left side of the penalty area and fired a shot that was parried away by Ciprian Tatarusanu but right into the path of Steaua defender Daniel Georgievski, who turned it into his own net while tracking back.
Ramires completed netted his second of the match in the 55th minute when he collected a pass from Oscar and slotted a right-footed shot into the upper corner, and Frank Lampard tacked on a late goal off of an assist from Willian.
The win sees Chelsea bounce back from its opening day loss to FC Basel as the Blues now eclipse the Swiss side in the Group E table on goal difference. Basel hosted Schalke in its Champions League fixture Tuesday, but suffered a 1-0 defeat behind Julian Draxler's 54th-minute strike.
Arsenal rose to the top of Group F thanks to a 2-0 defeat of Napoli on Tuesday. Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud provided the goals for the Gunners, scoring just seven minutes apart in the first half.
Borussia Dortmund, which lost to Napoli in its first Champions League contest of the campaign, moved into second place in the group with a 3-0 defeat of Marseille. Robert Lewandowski bagged a brace in the affair with Marco Reus adding a goal, as well.
Group G action has seen Atletico Madrid claim maximum points from its two matches after a late goal from Arda Turan handed the Spanish side a 2-1 victory over FC Porto on Tuesday. Porto maintains second place in the group after Zenit St. Petersburg and Austria Vienna played to a 0-0 draw in Russia.
And in Group H, Barcelona made the most of Scott Brown's sending off in the 59th minute as Cesc Fabregas scored 15 minutes from time to see the Catalans get a 1-0 win over 10-man Celtic while AC Milan was awarded a controversial penalty late on, which Mario Balotelli converted, as the Italian giants salvaged a point from a 1-1 draw with Ajax.
