Atletico Mineiro wins Copa Libertadores on PKs

Belo Horizonte, Brazil (Sports Network) - Leonardo Silva scored a late equalizer and then netted the winning penalty kick as Atletico Mineiro claimed the Copa Libertadores title on Wednesday by beating Olimpia, 4-3, on penalty kicks.

Olimpia entered Wednesday's second leg with a 2-0 advantage having won the first leg in Paraguay.

But the second leg in Brazil saw Jo score early in the second half to pull Atletico to within a goal.

Olimpia was holding on to its aggregate lead as the match entered the final 10 minutes, but the visitors were reduced to 10 men when Julio Cesar Manzur received his second yellow card in the 84th minute for a foul on Atletico's Alecsandro.

The Brazilian side capitalized two minutes later with Silva sending a header past Olimpia goalkeeper Martin Silva, forcing the match into extra time after a 2-2 aggregate score.

Despite playing up a man for the 30 minutes, Atletico was unable to breach the Olimpia defense and the title would be decided on penalty kicks.

Herminio Miranda failed to convert the first kick for Olimpia, and Atletico was calmly efficient, scoring on its first four attempts, including the title- winning goal from Silva.

Atletico's win continues a run of dominance for Brazilian sides, which have won the last four competitions.
