Potter downs Shirley for U.S. Women's Mid-Am title
Asheville, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Julia Potter made par on the 19th hole to defeat Margaret Shirley and win the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championship on Thursday.
Potter, who was the stroke-play medalist, won her first USGA Championship. Shirley, who ousted four-time champion Meghan Stasi in the semifinals, was competing in her first USGA Championship final.
Potter, a 25-year-old out of Indiana, birdied the third at Biltmore Forest Country Club to grab an early lead, but Shirley got up and down for par to win the fourth and square the match.
Shirley, a 27-year-old from Georgia, rolled in a 4-footer for par on the fifth to go 1-up. Potter hit a poor chip on the seventh and that led to her falling 2-down.
Potter parred the eighth to get with 1-down and squared the match at 11 with a birdie after Shirley tripped to a 3-putt bogey. Shirley made par on 12 to regain the lead, but Potter birdied the 13th to square the match for a third time.
Shirley was conceded par on No. 15 to regain a 1-up lead. She missed a 4-foot par try at 17 to square things up. After they halved 18 with pars, the left- hander Potter parred the 19th for the win.
