Stasi rallies to reach U.S. Women's Mid-Am quarters
Asheville, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Defending champion Meghan Stasi posted a comeback victory Tuesday evening to reach the quarterfinals of the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championship before play was suspended due to darkness.
Stasi defeated Amy Loughney, 5 & 4, in the round of 32 earlier Tuesday, but fell behind by as many as three holes in her round of 16 showdown with Renata Young. The reigning champ battled back, though, pulling even with a birdie at the 16th, going 1-up with a par at the 17th and matching Young's bogey at the last to hold on for the win.
Play was suspended with just one match remaining on the course, as Laura Coble held a 1-up lead over Linda Jeffery through 16 holes when darkness set in. Play will resume at 8 a.m. ET.
Stroke-play medalist Julia Potter also advanced to the quarterfinals Tuesday with a 3 & 2 defeat of Marilyn Hardy in the round of 32 and a 1-up win over Kate Hildahl in the later session.
Martha Leach, who won this event in 2009, reached the quarters with a 2 & 1 triumph over Christina Proteau, while Andrea Kraus advanced with a 6 & 5 dismantling of 2004 champion Corey Weworski.
Also reaching the quarterfinals on Tuesday were Tara Joy-Connelly, Stefi Markovich and Margaret Shirley.
