Port, Cohn reach Senior Women's Amateur final
San Martin, CA (Sports Network) - Defending champion Ellen Port earned two easy wins on Wednesday and advanced to face Susan Cohn in the final match at the USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship.
Port cruised to a 6 & 4 win over Marilyn Hardy in the quarterfinals Wednesday morning, then beat Mary Jane Hiestand 4 & 3 in the semifinals.
Cohn needed 20 holes to oust 2004 U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur winner Corey Weworski in the quarters, then cruised to a 4 & 3 win over Caryn Wilson in the semis at CordeValle Golf Club.
Port, a four-time U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur champ, lost the first hole when Hiestand opened with a birdie but bounced back with three straight wins, all with pars, to go 2-up.
After Port bogeyed the fifth to lose the hole, she won two in a row from the sixth to move 3-up. The duo traded wins at 10 and 11 before three straight halves. Port birdied the par-5 15th to close out the semifinal win.
Cohn and Wilson split the first four holes then halved three in a row from the fifth. Wilson bogeyed the eighth to fall 1-down and she a mess of the 11th to dip 2-down.
After a pair of halves, Cohn closed out the match with pars on 14 and 15.
