Watt, Raymond advance at U.S. Amateur
Brookline, MA (Sports Network) - Stroke-play medallists Brady Watt and Neil Raymond both won their opening round matches on Wednesday at the U.S. Amateur Championship.
Watt cruised to a 5 & 3 win over Sean Walsh, while Raymond hung on for a 1-up win over Jason Anthony at The Country Club.
The Australian Watt won the second and third holes. A bogey at the seventh by Walsh moved Watt 3-up, but Watt bogeyed the next two holes and his lead was down to 1-up.
Walsh bogeyed the 10th and double-bogeyed the 11th to again slide 3-down, then struggled on 14 and 15 to hand the match to Watt.
Raymond bogeyed the first two holes to fall 2-down, but he won the next two to square the match. Anthony moved 1-up two more times, but made double-bogey at the ninth to square things up for the third and final time.
Around the turn, Raymond claimed two of the first three holes to go 2-up. He tripped to a bogey at the 15th to trim his lead in half, but the pair matched scores on the final three holes to give Raymond the match.
Carr Vernon, Brandon Hagy and 2013 U.S. Junior Amateur champ Scottie Scheffler were the only three players that needed extra holes on Wednesday. Scheffler won in 20 holes, while the other two went 19.
Adam Ball claimed the largest win of the day, as he rolled over Joey Petronio, 6 & 4. Corey Conners ran past Rodolfo Cazaubon, 5 & 4.
Matthew Fitzpatrick, who was the low amateur at the 2013 British Open, picked up a 4 & 3 win over Gerrit Chambers.
Mario Clemens, the 2013 Mexican Amateur champion, 2013 Canadian Amateur champion Eli Cole and 2013 U.S. Amateur Public Links champion Jordan Niebrugge all lost their first-round matches.
The second and third rounds of match play will be contested on Thursday, while the championship wraps up with Sunday's 36-hole final.
