Hardy grabs early lead at U.S. Amateur
Brookline, MA (Sports Network) - Nick Hardy carded a 5-under 65 on Monday to grab a 1-stroke lead after the first round of stroke play at the U.S. Amateur Championship.
Hardy played his first round at Charles River Country Club and posted six birdies, including three straight from the 13th, around a lone bogey. The 17- year-old will play Tuesday's round at the tournament's other site, The Country Club.
"I gave myself a lot of opportunities at the beginning of the round and I birdied No. 4 and No. 8," Hardy said. "I also hit a lot of fairways and greens to get off to a good start. Good ball-striking is one of my strengths."
Richy Werenski shot a 4-under 66 at Charles River to sit in second place, while Neil Raymond, Matt Fitzpatrick, Bryson Dechambeau and Tyler Klava all carded 3-under 67s to share third.
Raymond was the lone member of that group to play his opening round at The Country Club.
Jordan Niebrugge, who captured the title at this year's U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, shot 69 at Charles River to own a share of 12th place.
Defending champion Steven Fox stumbled to a 2-over 72 during his opening round at The Country Club to sit among a large group of players tied for 58th place.
The second round of stroke play is slated for Tuesday. The match-play portion of the championship runs from Wednesday through Sunday's 36-hole final.
