Matsubara among first-round winners at Women's Am
Charleston, SC (Sports Network) - Stroke-play medalist Yumi Matsubara eased past Italy's Bianca Maria Fabrizio with a 2 & 1 decision on Wednesday to advance to the round of 32 at the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship.
The duo traded pars at the first hole before Matsubara parred the second to grab a lead she would not relinquish for the remainder of the day.
Matsubara then took advantage of Fabrizio's double bogey at the fourth and bogey at the fifth to move 3-up on the Italian, but slipped to a bogey of her own at the seventh to drop her advantage back to two.
Fabrizio would get no closer that, however, and Matsubara stretched her lead to 4-up thanks to a set of pars at the 11th and 12th.
Fabrizio got back within two with birdies at the 13th and 15th, but the duo traded pars at the next two holes to seal the win for Matsubara.
Also earning 2 & 1 victories on Wednesday were Emily Collins, Nicole Morales, Meghan Stasi, Katelyn Sepmoree, Caroline Inglis, Ally McDonald and Emily Tubert.
Emma Talley and Alison Lee moved on with 3 & 1 wins, while Kotone Hori, Casie Cathrea, Brittany Fan, Laura Wearn, Alexandra Harkins, Leona Maguire and Maria Fassi advanced with 3 & 2 decisions.
Lauren Diaz-Yi, Kacie Komoto, Annie Park and Cammie Gray each won by a 4 & 3 margin, Su-Hyun Oh took a 5 & 3 victory, and Yueer Cindy Feng earned a 5 & 4 decision to move to the round of 32.
The biggest winners of the day were Minjee Lee and Aurora Kan, who captured 6 & 4 and 7 & 5 decisions, respectively.
Lori Beth Adams and Mariel Galdiano advanced with 2-up margins, while Doris Chen, Gabriela Lopez and Tatiana Wijaya captured 1-up victories.
Grace Na and Kendall Prince each needed extra holes to advance as Na took down Megan Khang in 19 holes and Prince defeated Casey Danielson in 20.
The match-play portion of the championship continues on Thursday and will conclude with Sunday's 36-hole final.
