Smith advances to quarters at U.S. Mid-Am
Lake Forest, IL (Sports Network) - Three-time champion Nathan Smith won the battle of Western Pennsylvanians on Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.
Smith, who is from Pittsburgh, needed 19 holes to oust Oakmont, Pa. resident Sean Knapp. Smith cruised to a 5 & 4 win over Jeff Murphy in the second round.
Smith, the 2003, 2009 and 2010 winner, will face Corby Segal in the quarters. Segal went to the 18th hole in both of his matches Tuesday, beating Walter Todd, 1-up in round two, and knocking out Uly Grisette, 2-up, in the third round at Conway Farms Golf Club.
Dennis Bull will take on Tim Jackson in the first quarterfinal. Bull beat Trevor Sauntry, 3 & 1, in the second round, and took down Charlie Blanchard, 2-up, in round three. Blanchard had ousted stroke-play medalist Brad Valois, 2-up, in the second round.
Jackson needed 19 holes to win his second round meeting with John McClure, then rolled over John Patterson, 4 & 2.
Todd White will battle Casey Boyns in the third quarterfinal match. White cruised to a 4 & 3 win over Mason Casper in round two before holding off Kevin Wassmer, 1-up, in the third round.
Boyns needed two extra holes to beat Brian Tennyson in the second round before fending off Michael Muehr, 1-up, in the third round.
The last quarterfinal will have Matthew Mattare battling Garrett Rank.
Mattare bested Joseph Benedetti, 1-up, in the second round, then beat Stephen Cox, 2 & 1, in round three. Rank trounced Scott Harvey, 8 & 6, in the second round, before easing past Matt Cohn, 5 & 3, in round three.
