Wyatt ousted at U.S. Amateur
Cherry Hills Village, CO (Sports Network) - Stroke play medalist Bobby Wyatt lost his third-round match on Thursday at the 112th U.S. Amateur Championship.
Wyatt had earned a 2-up win in the second round earlier Thursday, but dropped a 1-down decision to University of Alabama teammate Justin Thomas in round three. Wyatt had led for five of the first seven holes, but after Thomas squared the match with a birdie on No. 8, Wyatt never led again.
Thomas took the 10th at the Cherry Hills Country Club with a par and won the 12th with a bogey. Wyatt fought back to square the match on 15, but Thomas took the 17th with a birdie and closed out the match as they halved the 18th.
Thomas will face Oliver Goss in the quarterfinals. Goss held off Bobby Leopold, 2 & 1.
Ricardo Gouveia had the easiest third-round match as he cruised to a 6 & 4 win over Devon Purser. Gouveia will take on Michael Weaver on Friday. Weaver won the final two holes of regulation, then birdied the 19th hole to fend off Albin Choi.
Steven Fox advanced with a 2-up win over Zack Munroe. Fox will take on Chris Williams, who was a 3 & 2 winner over Edouard Espana.
Cheng-Tsung Pan also earned a 2-up victory over Andrew Presley. Pan will face Brandon Hagy on Friday. Hagy bested Patrick Newcomb by a 3 & 2 margin.
Match play continues on Friday with quarterfinal action. The semifinals will take place on Saturday, while the 36-hole final is slated for Sunday.
