Wyatt in front at U.S. Amateur

Cherry Hills Village, CO (Sports Network) - University of Alabama All-American Bobby Wyatt carded a 7-under par 64 Monday to grab the lead after the first round of stroke play at the 112th U.S. Amateur Championship.

Some of the players, like Wyatt, teed off at the Cherry Hills Country Club. He's two strokes in front of six golfers who played at the par-70 CommonGround Golf Course.

Those tied for second place are Justin Thomas, Chris Williams, Sebastian Vazquez, Brandon Hagy, Max Homa and Zac Blair. Thomas is a teammate of Wyatt's at Alabama.

Bryson Dechambeau is one shot further back after playing his round at Cherry Hills.

Wyatt had eight birdies and a bogey during his scintillating round. Five of those birdies were on the front nine. Ranked seventh in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, he also birdied his final two holes.

Jack Nicklaus, an 18-time major champion, arrived at CommonGround Golf Course to see his son, Gary, play to a 1-over 71, which was tied for 64th place.

The top 64 players after stroke play Tuesday will advance to match play, which starts Wednesday. If players are tied following Tuesday, a playoff will be necessary to get down to the 64 participants.
