Short leads by 2 at Champions Q-School

Scottsdale, AZ ( - Wes Short, Jr. carded his second straight 5-under 66 on Thursday to extend his lead to two strokes after 54 holes of the Champions Tour Q-School.

Short ended three rounds at 17-under-par 196. His total of 196 matched the record that Steve Haskins set in 2009.

Doug Garwood posted 67 for the second day in a row to end three rounds alone in second place at 15-under 198. Scott Dunlap is one stroke back at minus-14 after shooting 66 on Thursday.

Greg Bruckner fired a 7-under 64, the low round of the day Thursday at TPC Scottsdale's Champions Course, and jumped into a tie for fourth at 13-under- par 200. He was joined there by Mike Reid (66) and Ben Bates (67).

Willie Wood shot 5-under 66 for the second straight day. He stands alone in seventh at minus-12, while Bill Glasson (71), P.H. Horgan III (69) and Jeff Coston (67) are one back at 11-under 202.

Short was even-par after six holes, but it was an interesting trip there. After stumbling to a bogey on the par-4 second, he poured in three consecutive birdies from the third. He gave two of those shots right back as he hit a poor chip shot, then 3-putted for a double-bogey on the par-3 sixth.

The 49-year-old birdied the ninth and 10th, both par-5s, to move back into the lead at minus-14. Short ran off five straight pars from the 11th.

Short birdied the par-3 16th and followed with an eagle on the 17th to jump to 17-under. He parred the last to lead by two.

"I just made a mess of the sixth hole, but overall I made a few good saves when I really needed to and capitalized on the good shots I hit. I'm proud of myself. I'll try to keep playing like I have been and we'll see what happens," Short said. "I've been trying to play smart and take advantage of the par-5s this week and it's worked out well so far. If it's just raining tomorrow, I'll be okay. We will all get used to it."

Garwood, who played alongside Short, started the round with eight consecutive pars. He ended that run with a birdie on the ninth.

Around the turn, Garwood collected three more birdies to end two back.

NOTES: Short has bounced back and forth from the Tour to the PGA Tour through his career, but has missed significant time over the last three years with back problems ...
