Dragoo still in front at Great Waterway Classic
Gananoque, ON (Sports Network) - David Dragoo posted a very respectable even- par 71 in brutal conditions Saturday to remain atop the leaderboard after the third round of The Great Waterway Classic.
Dragoo, the second-round leader, finished 54 holes at 13-under 200 and is one stroke clear of Eugene Wong, who holed out from the fairway for eagle to win the last event on the Canadian Tour, the Canadian Tour Championship.
Wong shot a 3-under 68 on Saturday to get to 12-under.
The round of the day absolutely belonged to Daniel Im.
With Saturday's round played under heavy rain and high wind, Im fired an 8- under 63 and vaulted into a tie for third place with Will Strickler, who had a 2-under 69. The pair is in at 11-under par.
Some players were so impressed with Im's round, they took to Twitter. Darren Wallace, who is tied for 22nd, called it "one of the best rounds I've ever heard of," and Brett Kanda tweeted that it was the "best round of the year."
As great as Im's round was, he still trails Dragoo.
He got off to a poor start on Saturday with a bogey at the first, but he rebounded with back-to-back birdies at two and three. Dragoo birdied the par-5 seventh, but even the leader wasn't immune from mistakes in these conditions. He double bogeyed the par-4 ninth to fall back to 13-under par.
After a birdie at 11, Dragoo made another double, this time at the par-5 13th. He was down to 12-under and in a tie for the lead with Wong, but a birdie at 16 gave him sole possession of the lead.
Trey Denton (70) and Jaime Gomez (72) share fifth at minus-10.
Carlos Sainz, Jr. (74), Tyler Harris (73) and Danny Sahl (69) are knotted in seventh at 9-under 204.
NOTES: Dragoo is winless on the Canadian Tour...Only 14 of the 62 players who made the cut, broke par on Saturday...This is the final event on the Canadian Tour schedule this season.
