Smith grabs lead at Desert Dunes
Desert Hot Springs, CA (Sports Network) - Byron Smith shot a five-under 67 Saturday to take a one-shot lead after three rounds of the Canadian Tour's season-closing Desert Dunes Classic.
Smith had an eagle, four birdies and a late bogey at Desert Dunes Golf Club to finish 54 holes at 10-under 206, one shot clear of Kent Eger. Eger would have entered Sunday tied for the lead had he not bogeyed the last.
Still, Eger finished with his third straight three-under 69 and is firmly in second at nine-under 209.
The second round finished on Saturday after darkness forced its suspension Friday night. Without any further delays, the third round was completed on time.
Ryan Yip (67) and Stuart Anderson (70) share third at seven-under, while defending champion Adam Hadwin (71) and Brad Fritsch (71) are further back in fifth at minus-five.
Smith began the third round one shot behind Eger, and both were in the same group. Both players birdied the first hole, and Smith tied Eger for the first time with a birdie at the third.
Eger came right back to go in front with a birdie at the fourth and stretched his lead to three with back-to-back birdies from the seventh.
Smith, though, responded with an eagle at the ninth to get back to within one, and birdies at 10 and 13 put him ahead alone for the first time.
Eger parred nine straight after the birdie at the eighth, and he tied Smith after Smith's only bogey of the day on the 17th. Eger followed with a bogey at the 18th, however, to enter Sunday trailing by one.
NOTES: Smith won twice on the Canadian Tour in 2007, and he has one top 10 finish in seven events this year...The cut, as predicted, fell at four-over 148.
