NCAA Game Summary - Wyoming at Fresno State

(Saturday, October 20)

Final Score: Fresno State 42, Wyoming 14

Fresno, CA (Sports Network) - Derek Carr threw for 268 yards and three touchdowns as he helped guide the Fresno State Bulldogs to a comfortable 42-14 win over the Wyoming Cowboys in Mountain West Conference play at Bulldog Stadium.

Carr converted 32-of-48 passes and was sacked twice as the Bulldogs (5-3, 3-1 MWC) posted their third win in the last four outings and surpassed their entire win total from last season.

The Cowboys (1-6, 0-3), losers of three in a row, were paced by Brett Smith who returned to action and hit on 18-of-38 passes for 158 yards, a pair of touchdowns and an interception.

Fresno State had the game well under control in the first half, leading 35-0 at the break thanks in part to Rashad Evans who caught a six-yard TD pass to get the ball rolling and then returned a punt 78 yards for a TD later in the first quarter.

Carr combined with Victor Dean on a 19-yard TD pass play late in the opening frame, followed by a 14-yard TD run by Isaiah Burse moments into the second period. Capping off a 17-play, 92-yard drive to essentially close out the first half, Carr hit Davante Adams with an 11-yard scoring pass to give the hosts a commanding advantage at the break.

Putting together a lengthy drive of their own near the end of the third quarter, the Pokes were directed 92 yards on 11 plays by Smith who eventually locked up with Riley Lange on a six-yard TD pass play to finally put the visitors on the scoreboard.

Midway through the fourth, the FSU defense came to life as Phillip Thomas picked off his seventh pass of the season and returned it 20 yards for his third TD of the campaign, boosting the Bulldogs lead back to 35 points.

On the ensuing drive, Smith orchestrated a 13-play, 74-yard march that ended with a six-yard TD pass to Dominic Rufran, but at that stage it was too little, too late.

Already tied for the most interceptions in a season in the MWC, Thomas has set a new school record with his three INT returns for scores and the Bulldogs now have a total of five such efforts which is also a new school record.
