NCAA Game Summary - Colorado at Fresno State
(Saturday, September 15th)
Final Score: Fresno State 69, Colorado 14
Fresno, CA (Sports Network) - Robbie Rouse ran for 144 yards and two touchdowns and added another two scores through the air as the Fresno State Bulldogs rolled over Colorado, 69-14, in non-conference action at Bulldog Stadium.
Rouse, who also set the school record for career rushing in the outing for Fresno State (2-1), carried the ball a mere nine times and caught four passes for 42 yards, all in the first half. Derek Carr converted 17-of-22 passing for 300 yards and five touchdowns for the Bulldogs in the onslaught as well.
On defense, Phillip Thomas recorded three interceptions for FSU, returning a pair of them for touchdowns.
The Buffaloes (0-3) had trouble getting their offense on track the entire night as they turned the ball over a total of four times. Quarterbacks Connor Wood and Jordan Webb combined to hit 10-of-27 for 132 yards and a score, but they were sacked a collective three times and each tossed a pair of interceptions in the lopsided setback.
Rouse scored three straight touchdowns for the Bulldogs and four of their five in the first frame, beginning with a four-yard run. The running back then reeled in both a nine-yard TD pass and a 12-yard effort from Carr to make the score 21-0.
Carr then turned his attention to Isaiah Burse for a sizzling 97-yard score. The pass play was the second-longest in program history behind a 98-yard TD pass from Paul Pinegar to Paul Williams against Boise State back in 2005.
Thanks to an exciting 94-yard streak to the end zone late in the first quarter, Rouse not only boosted the FSU lead to 35-0, he also became the school's all-time leading rusher, eclipsing the previous mark of 3,473 yards set by Ron Rivers from 1991-93.
FSU piled up a staggering 322 yards of total offense in the first quarter alone. Colorado finished the night with just 278 yards.
The Bulldogs continued to pressure Colorado early in the second quarter as they choose to shoot for the end zone on fourth down inside the five yard line, with Carr hooking up with Josh Harper on a fade to the right corner. The PAT was blocked however, leaving the hosts with a commanding 41-0 advantage.
A combination of strong blocking and weak tackling contributed to the next touchdown for the Bulldogs, a 60-yard catch and run by Davante Adams to boost the lead to 48-0 with just under eight minutes remaining in the first half.
Colorado finally stopped the bleeding when Webb lofted a pass to Tyler McCulloch for a 23-yard TD with 5:25 remaining in the second quarter.
Before the half could end the Bulldogs struck yet again. After Carr punted and pinned Colorado down at the two-yard line, Thomas intercepted Webb's the first pass in the ensuing series and returned it 16 yards for the score.
The 55 points by FSU set a new record for points in a half in the Mountain West Conference. This is the first season for the Bulldogs in the MWC after residing in the Western Athletic Conference.
Colorado, which punted away a total of seven times in the first half, allowed a massive 516 yards to the Bulldogs in just 30 minutes of action.
Thomas and the FSU defense struck again in the third quarter when, with 9:06 to play in the period, the defensive back stepped in front of a Wood pass, picked it off and brought it back 43 yards for another score to further pad the lead for the hosts.
With just over nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs put together a six-play, 80-yard drive that culminated with a one-yard TD run by Marteze Waller, making the score 69-7.
The Buffs had one last gasp as the squad put together a 10-play, 64-yard drive of their own which was capped by a one-yard TD run by Josh Ford with 2:58 before the final gun.
Rouse, who had averaged 123.0 ypg against the last four BCS schools he faced, entered the week fourth in the nation among active rushers with 3,395 career yards.
The record for points scored in a single half by the Bulldogs is 66, registered against New Mexico back in 1991. The team set an overall scoring record for a single game in that meeting as well, posting 94 versus UNM.
