NCAA Game Summary - California at Southern California

(Saturday, September 22nd)

Final Score: (13) Southern California 27, California 9

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Silas Redd rushed for 158 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries as No. 13 Southern California dropped California, 27-9, on Saturday at the Los Angeles Coliseum.

Curtis McNeal also had a big day on the ground, running for 115 yards on 10 carries. Matt Barkley completed 22-of-34 passes for 192 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Trojans (3-1, 1-1 Pac-12), who bounced back from a shocking upset at the hands of Stanford last week.

Marqise Lee hauled in 11 passes for 94 yards and two touchdowns in the victory.

"I think that the game was won at the line of scrimmage. We limited these guys to 77 yards rushing," USC coach Lane Kiffin said. "Our offense and defensive lines, if you look at plusses and minuses when it comes to sacks, we had seven and they had none. That is an explosive offense, and at the end of the day we won it up front. I'm extremely proud of our players."

Zach Maynard threw for 173 yards and two interceptions on 18-of-33 passing, while Keenan Allen caught nine balls for 93 yards for California.

Vincenzo D'Amato converted three field goals in the setback for the Golden Bears, (1-3, 0-1) who lost for the second straight week.

"USC has a great team and had a great game plan," Maynard said. "They were jamming our receivers off the ball and they were getting hit once they caught the ball."

USC's game-opening offensive possession was cut short when Barkley was picked off in the end zone by Steve Williams, but the Trojans opened the scoring on their next touch.

Starting from their own 29, the Trojans went 71 yards in six plays before Redd capped the drive with a 33-yard sprint to the end zone.

California bridged the first and second quarters with an extensive 15-play, 60 yard drive, highlighted by a key fourth-down conversion to bring the ball to the USC 21.

The drive stalled at the six-yard line and D'Amato easily connected on the 24- yard field goal to bring the Golden Bears within 7-3.

The Trojans began their ensuing drive on the 25 and Barkley hit Lee for 22 yards on the first play. Two plays later, McNeal gashed the Cal defense for 18 yards to move into opposing territory and Barkley capped the six-play, 75-yard march with an 11-yard TD strike to Lee, making it 14-3.

After a series of punts by both sides, USC started with possession at its own 20 and 2:35 on the second-quarter clock. Barkley ran the two-minute offense to perfection, moving his team to the Cal 30 and Andre Heidari banged a 40-yard field goal through the uprights to give the Trojans a 17-3 halftime lead.

California scored the only points of the third quarter on a pair of field goals by D'Amato, cutting the deficit to 17-9.

USC began the fourth quarter on the move, facing a 3rd-and-6 at the Cal 25. The first play of the frame resulted in a minimal gain and Heidari hit a 41- yarder.

The Trojans' defense forced a Cal three-and-out on the ensuing possession and got the ball back at their own 25.

From there, Barkley led a 14-play, 75 yard drive and capped the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown strike to Lee.
