NCAA Game Summary - West Virginia at Oklahoma State

(Saturday, November 10)

Final Score: Oklahoma State 55, West Virginia 34

Stillwater, OK (Sports Network) - Josh Stewart caught 13 passes for a career- high 172 yards and accounted for three touchdowns as the Oklahoma State Cowboys held off the West Virginia Mountaineers, 55-34, in a Big 12 Conference showdown at Boone Pickens Stadium.

In addition to his two touchdowns receiving, Stewart also had one carry for 46 yards and a score for the Cowboys (6-3, 4-2 Big 12), who are now bowl eligible. Clint Chelf was impressive in his first career start, completing 22- of-31 passes for 292 yards with four touchdowns and an interception.

For WVU (5-4, 2-4), Geno Smith threw for 364 yards and two scores on 36-of-54 passing and also added a rushing score. Stedman Bailey caught a career-high 14 passes for 225 yards and a touchdown, and Tavon Austin also had a fine day receiving with 11 receptions for 79 yards and a score. The Mountaineers have now dropped four in a row after a 5-0 start to the season.

The Cowboys took advantage of the suspect WVU defense early in the game. They got the scoring started on their first drive when Stewart ripped off a 46-yard touchdown run, then later in the quarter Chelf completed a 21-yard touchdown pass to Stewart.

The Mountaineers first touchdown came off the arm of Paul Millard, who connected with Bailey for a 37-yard scoring strike at the end of the first quarter. WVU didn't enjoy the score for long, as Justin Gilbert returned the ensuing kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown to put Oklahoma State up, 21-7.

The teams swapped touchdowns midway through the second quarter. First, Smith brought WVU back to within one score following a 17-yard touchdown pass to Austin, but Oklahoma State countered less than two minutes later on a 48-yard scoring strike from Chelf to Blake Jackson.

Oklahoma State added a 26-yard field goal from Quinn Sharp, and WVU matched it with a 41-yard field goal from Tyler Bitancurt. The teams went into the half with the score 31-17 in favor of the Cowboys.

Smith continued to keep his team in the game early on in the third quarter after he and Ryan Nehlen hooked up on a nine-yard touchdown, but Oklahoma State kept a sizable buffer between it and the Mountaineers on its following possession with a five-yard touchdown pass from Chelf to Charlie Moore.

Following a 37-yard field goal from Bitancurt, Smith added another touchdown, this time on a one-yard rush, to get the Mountaineers to within four. Sharp kicked a 32-yard field goal a few minutes later to make it a touchdown lead for the Cowboys.

Another Chelf-to-Steward scoring connection, this time from 20 yards out, extended Oklahoma State's lead to 14 early in the fourth quarter. Jeremy Smith added a 21-yard rushing score later in the quarter to seal it for the Cowboys.

Those expecting an air show were not disappointed, as the teams combined for nearly 700 yards passing. WVU converted just 6-of-20 third downs on the afternoon.
