Boeheim reaches 800 wins as Syracuse routs Albany

Syracuse, NY (Sports Network) - Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim opened his 34th season at the helm of the Orange by recording his landmark 800th victory as his team blew out Albany, 75-43, as part of the 2K Sports Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at the Carrier Dome.

Boeheim (800-288) joined Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and Jim Calhoun of Connecticut as the only active Division I coaches to reach the milestone. Eight Division I men's coaches have accumulated 800 victories in their respective careers. Only Dean Smith (North Carolina), Adolph Rupp (Kentucky) and Jim Phelan (Mt. St. Mary's) have won more games at one Division I school. The other coaches with at least 800 wins are Bob Knight and Eddie Sutton.

Arinze Onuaku scored 14 points, while Scoop Jardine, Wes Johnson and Kris Joseph each scored 12 for Syracuse (1-0), which advanced to the Big East Tournament finals and the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament last season.

The resounding victory came after the Orange were sharply criticized after being beaten in an 82-79 final by Division II LeMoyne in an exhibition game at the Carrier Dome last Tuesday.

Will Harris had 14 points and Tim Ambrose 12 for the Great Danes (0-1), who finished 15-16 overall last season.
